Rebecca Fahringer

I am never sure what to write in a bio, and when I try to copy the bios of my teammates they keep talking about how much they love bikes. I don't really love bikes? I love riding bikes. I love what the atmosphere of bikes brings. I love the comradery of it all. I love that on a bike I can feel both extreme pain and joy. Sometimes at the same time. The bikes themselves? If I were worried about how much I liked what brought me to where I am, I would choose something more cuddly, like horses, or easier to travel with, like running shoes. But there's something about the people that ride the bikes. So that's my bio. A person on a bike who usually likes other people on bikes.

RIDING WITH KONA SINCE

2018

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE KONA IN YOUR QUIVER AND WHY?

This year I got a Libre DL and dang if it isn't the work horse of ‘em all, so I will go with that one for now.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND WHERE DO YOU LIVE?

From Dayton, Ohio. I live kind of everywhere and nowhere right now.

DO YOUR BIKES REQUIRE ANY SPECIAL SETUP TRICKS TO MAKE THEM “JUST RIGHT”?

I used to think, "no", but it turns out I like very obscure gearing. Double rings on bikes that come single ring, way too large of cassettes on some bikes and too tiny on others. Anything to make my mechanic’s jobs a little trickier.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS SEASON?

As I write this, I am mid-season, so I say for it to stop feeling so crappy and start being more fun. Looking forward? Being able to find the silver lining in working so hard to not really go that far forward. Hopefully as you read this that has changed for the better!

WHO IS THE PERSON YOU MOST ADMIRE AND WHY?

Oh man, this is a terrible question to have someone write the answer to and put it out in the world. I can't name just one person, but I admire people who are truly good friends. The ones who check in without prompting. The ones who send cards even if you haven't seen them in years. The friends who can give thoughtful gifts or remember to save you one of your favorite cookies. Genuinely good people. I admire them, because they are obviously good to have around, but also make me strive to be a little bit better.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE TRACK OF 2020 AND WHY?

I read this as track like music track then was confused as to what music racing was. So that's something. The World Cup in Namur is always a great CX track. I had a few mountain bike rides that were my favorite this year, but I'd need another go-round to really pick just one.

WHAT WAS THE LAST GIFT YOU GAVE SOMEONE?

I sent my mom a cookbook.

WHAT FICTIONAL CHARACTER DO YOU IDENTIFY WITH THE MOST AND WHY?

Anakin Skywalker. I am not sure I 1:1 identify with him, but his character has always resonated with me and I have loved the depth and complexity of him; something that keeps going even once he is Darth Vader. Anakin was just a plucky kid who was pushed into being something great. His passion took over and he crossed a line (in gruesome fashion, no doubt). He keeps on being great, but not for the team we want him to be on. And sometimes that's just how things turn out in life, isn't it?

HOW WOULD BARRY WICKS DESCRIBE YOU IN JUST THREE WORDS?

really. high. maintenance.

Is Barry's question to describe us in three words and we see if we match? Can we describe Barry in three words? Pure Joy Embodied.

2020 WAS A CRAZY YEAR, CAN YOU SHARE WITH US ONE HIGHLIGHT AND LOWLIGHT?

Highlight: getting to spend the spring/summer/fall in Oregon and riding mountain bikes with good friends. Barry Wicks has been showing me the trails and they are just SO GOOD, and the uphills are SO HARD and the downhills are SO FUN. I asked Barry if I would ever be as fast as him and he said no. Just like that. "No." Didn't even soften the blow. I mean, I know the answer was no. But man, not even a, "if you try hard enough!"
Lowlight: Going all-in on my CX career, moving to nowhere, working my butt off amidst a global pandemic, making it to Belgium to race despite all odds, and then taking the line only to not have it go even remotely close to how I imagined. Not the first time, the second time, third, or fourth time. It's like I asked Belgium this question instead of Barry about being fast, "Belgium, will I be successful if I try hard enough?" And Belgium just says, "no." But again, hopefully by the time anyone reads this, this lowlight turns into a highlight.
